Why buy a Japanese Import ?

Japanese cars are around 50-55% cheaper to buy new in Japan, than in Ireland.

When a vehicle is first registered in Japan, it comes with a 3 year Shaken. This is the equivalent to the Irish NCT or  British MOT. When it expires, the vehicle must be re-tested. This is the most stringent test of this type in the world. The cost for the first retest in Japan is around €2000.
Further re-tests are required every two years and usually cost more. Sometimes as much as €3400.

There are Japanese dealer incentives offering excellent deals to encourage consumers to always trade up for a new car.

As a result, Japanese consumers buy new cars on a regular basis. (8 million new units per annum in Japan. 2 million in the UK). Used car values depreciate rapidly in Japan. Also, due to the high expense of driving long distances in Japan, cars tend to cover much low mileages per annum (typically less than 8000Km per annum).

The Japanese take great care of their cars, owning a car in Japan is a status symbol and a Japanese vehicle will typically spend a large amount of it's life on show outside it's owners house/apartment. With lower mileages, unsalted roads, and the Japanese tradition of taking great care of their vehicles, the condition of a Japanese vehicle is normally much better than an Irish or UK vehicle of the same age.

All of the above points amalgamate to make quality Japanese cars very attractive for import.

Do Japnuts Take Trade-ins ?

No: Japnuts is not a car dealer in the traditional sense. We only source cars against specific customer requests.

What About Parts ?

There is a great myth that parts for Japanese cars are hard to get. These cars are built in the same factories as cars purchased new in Ireland and have almost all of the same parts in common. Pretty much the only difference may be in the tailgate and/or bumpers as the licence plates are different sizes. Otherwise engine and body parts are the same. The parts for most japanese imports may be sourced direct from most main dealers and many independant motor factors in Ireland / UK. Japnuts also keeps a record of all cars purchased on behalf of our customers and can arrange for new or second hand parts to be sent from Japan if required.

What Taxes will I need to pay ?

All cars imported from Japan are subject to 10% Import Duty on the cost of the vehicle plus the shipping charges. In addition most vehicles are subject to VAT at 21%.

Cars which are registered for use in Ireland are also subject to vehicle registration tax which is charges at either 25% or 30% of the market value (OSMP) of the vehicle, taking into account it's age and condition.
